Improving walking, wheeling and cycling connections between Dooradoyle and Raheen and the City Centre.

Project Overview

The South Circular Road Active Travel Scheme is an Active Travel project connecting the wider areas of Raheen and Dooradoyle to the city centre via South Circular Road and Henry Street.

The scheme forms an important part of Limerick's wider Active Travel network and supports connections between residential communities, schools, education facilities, workplaces and city centre destinations.

The project is intended to strengthen links between existing and planned Active Travel infrastructure, including connections towards Raheen, Dooradoyle and the western side of Limerick City. 

Why is this Project Needed?

The scheme is intended to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for people walking, wheeling and cycling along one of Limerick City's key urban corridors.

The project supports the development of a connected Active Travel network by improving access to education facilities, local services, workplaces, residential areas and public transport. It also seeks to encourage more sustainable travel choices for everyday journeys.

What Improvements are Proposed?

The scheme includes:

  • Improved footpaths

  • New pedestrian crossings

  • New cycle infrastructure

  • Junction upgrades

  • Traffic calming measures

  • Shared surface treatments where appropriate

  • New road markings and signage

  • Public realm and accessibility improvements

The scheme also includes improvements to connections with surrounding residential areas, schools and other local amenities.

Project Area

The scheme extends along the South Circular Road and Henry Street corridor from the Ballinacurra Road junction with South Circular Road towards Bishops Quay.

  • Residential communities along the South Circular Road corridor

  • Schools and education facilities

  • Mary Immaculate College

  • Limerick City Centre

  • Connections towards Raheen and Dooradoyle

Statutory Process and Consultation

This project progressed through a public consultation process and was approved through the Part 8 planning process in February 2023.
