The Artists’ Apartments, 1-2 John’s Square, form a part of Limerick City and County Council’s cultural strategy to continue to develop the cultural infrastructure of Limerick and to support the cultural economy.
The Artists’ Apartments create conditions for affordable living spaces for individual artists and attract and keep artists living and working in Limerick City, by encouraging living and working within the urban context. The apartments provide subsidised living spaces in recognition that artists and many individuals working in the arts are on modest income levels.
These apartments are part of a complex, in which six apartments are licensed for a period of between one year and three years. Any occupancy in excess of one year is subject to review at the complete discretion of the Council.
John's Square is an important gateway to the centre of Limerick City. It has been recently redeveloped, to form an appropriate setting for the historical buildings which surround John’s Square, including St. John’s Cathedral, St. John’s Hospital and the limestone townhouses. John’s Square is home to Dance Limerick and the apartments are in walking distance of Limerick Artists’ Studios, Limerick School of Art and Design, Colbert Station, Culture House, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Limerick City Library, the Hunt Museum and Limerick City and County Council Headquarters, Merchant's Quay.
The residential Artists’ Apartments, 1-2 John’s Square are supported by Limerick City and County Council and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Access II Scheme.
