The Childers Road Active Travel Scheme is a project that has been delivered by Limerick City & County Council. It has been funded by the National Transport Authority.
The Scheme connects the Kilmallock Road to the Ballinacurra Road junction via a cycle and pedestrian facility.
The Scheme was delivered in two phases:
- from the Kilmallock Road to the Roxboro Roundabout (completed in 2023)
- from the Roxboro Roundabout to the Ballinacurra Road junction (completed in 2024)
The works have included:
- Installing cycle lane separators
- Junction tightening
- New pedestrian crossing points at Roxboro Roundabout
- Footpath widening and improvement works for accessibility
- Associated landscaping works
- Raised tables and junction off selected feeder road
- Front of school improvement works at local schools
Works to improve crossings and footpaths at the entrance to Our Lady Queen of Peace NS in Janesboro and Our Lady of Lourdes NS, Rosbrien Road have also been conducted as part of the Scheme. These works will also benefit children attending the Midwest School for the Deaf campus.
The Childers Road Active Travel Scheme is considered a ‘strategic walking route’ and a part of the ‘secondary cycle network’ in the context of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy, and has been developed with consideration of the Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028.
The second phase of the project was completed and the overall works were launched in April 2024.
