Limerick City Greenway (UL to NTP)

Limerick City Greenway (UL to NTP) will extend the Smarter Travel route and the existing Shannon Fields Greenway, towards UL, Plassey Park Road and the National Technology Park.

Location: From the confluence of River Mulcair and River Shannon, along the southern bank of the River Shannon to Plassey Park Road and National Technology Park (NTP)

The elements of this project are:

  • Extension of the Limerick Smarter Travel Route, continuing eastwards along the southern bank of the River Shannon between the River Groody Bridge and Plassey Park Road.
  • New linkages to major destinations, including the University of Limerick and the IDA National Technology Park (NTP) at Plassey.
  • 3.3 km of upgraded shared path (3.0–4.0 m wide) constructed on existing paths and across greenfield areas.
  • 0.9 km segregated cycling and walking facilities along University Road and McLaughlan Road, providing safer commuter access.
  • Construction of new bridges and bridge upgrades.
  • New accessible ramp to Plassey Beach, replacing steep steps and enabling universal access for wheelchair users, families with buggies, and all mobility levels.
  • Landscaping including planting of 305 native Irish trees, hedgerows, riparian grasses, and pollinator plants in accordance with the National Biodiversity Action Plan.
  • Cycle- and pedestrian-friendly junction upgrades, including a new Toucan crossing at Plassey Park Road.
  • Overall Greenway length of 4.25 km.
