  • People Celebrating Africa Day in Limerick

Limerick will come together to celebrate Africa Day with a free, family‑friendly open‑air event at People’s Park on Saturday 23 May, from 12.00pm to 3.00pm.

The free event is led by Limerick City and County Council’s Local Authority Integration Team (LAIT) in partnership with DORAS, with support from Limerick Sports Partnership, and is funded through Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Africa Day aims to celebrate African cultures while bringing people of all backgrounds together in a welcoming and inclusive space.

The afternoon will offer a range of fun activities for families and children, including bouncy castles, sports games and activities, and face painting. Visitors can also enjoy African food, a live DJ, and performances by a gospel choir.

Africa Day is an opportunity to recognise the richness of African cultures and the contribution of African communities to life in Limerick. The event is open to everyone, and all are warmly invited to attend, celebrate, and enjoy a relaxed afternoon of music, food and family fun.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:

“Africa Day is a valued and established celebration in Limerick. It is a wonderful celebration of culture, community and connection. I am looking forward to everyone being able to recognise and enjoy the cultural richness that African communities bring to our city and county as the People’s Park comes alive with music, food and activity. Events like this strengthen understanding, build friendships and showcase the inclusive spirit that makes Limerick such a vibrant and forward-looking place.”

DORAS CEO, John Lannon said:

“We are delighted to be involved in Africa Day this year. The event will showcase the vibrancy and positive contributions of people of African descent, and the coming together of people from so many different backgrounds and cultures promises to be something Limerick can be proud of. We are grateful for the support provided by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration’s Integration Fund which helps to make this possible.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery added:

“Africa Day Limerick highlights the richness that comes from many cultures living side by side. It celebrates the traditions, talent and stories of African communities, while reinforcing what makes Limerick special, a shared sense of belonging, respect and community.”

Director General, Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly commented:

“We are delighted to partner with DORAS and work with Limerick Sports Partnership to host Africa Day 2026 in the iconic People’s Park. Africa Day offers a wonderful opportunity for people of all backgrounds to come together, celebrate African culture, and recognise the valued contribution of African communities across our city and county.”
