Limerick City and County Council is delighted to launch “PAWS – Pets Are Welcome”, a new Pet Friendly Business Initiative designed to support local retailers while enhancing the experience of pet owners across the city and county.
The initiative invites cafés, shops, and service providers to display official “Pet-Friendly Limerick” stickers in their windows, clearly signalling that pets are welcome on the premises. This simple, low-cost and highly visible programme aims to create a more inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant environment for residents and visitors alike.
Supported by the Mayoral Fund, the initiative is part of Limerick City and County Council’s broader commitment to strengthening community ties, supporting small businesses, and enhancing Limerick’s appeal as a progressive and welcoming destination.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is delighted to see the initiative
“As many people know, Henri, affectionately known as the First Dog of Limerick, is never too far from my side, whether I’m attending events, meeting visitors to Limerick, or simply stopping in for a coffee. Having the option to bring him along makes those everyday moments all the more enjoyable. Initiatives like ‘PAWS - Pets Are Welcome’ recognise the important role pets play in our lives and help create a more relaxed, welcoming atmosphere across our city and county. It’s about making Limerick an even friendlier place for people and their four-legged companions alike.”
Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery commented:
“The ‘PAWS - Pets Are Welcome’ initiative is a simple but impactful way to support our local businesses while making Limerick a more inclusive place for pet owners. It reflects our commitment to creating a welcoming and vibrant city and county for everyone.”
Director General, Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly commented:
“This initiative is about enhancing everyday experiences - whether you’re enjoying a coffee, shopping locally, or exploring Limerick with your pet. It’s a positive step in strengthening our community and supporting our local economy. It’s a small change that can make a big difference for both businesses and pet owners.”
Businesses interested in participating can collect their free official Pet-Friendly stickers from Council offices at:
- Merchant’s Quay
- Dooradoyle
- Newcastle West
- Kilmallock
- Rathkeale
They are also encouraged to register their business to be included on the official list of pet-friendly locations via Limerick.ie.
The presence of a Pet-Friendly sticker does not imply unrestricted access, and pet owners are expected to act responsibly, respect staff guidance, and ensure their pets are well-behaved and appropriately supervised at all times.
