A new information booklet outlining the important new role of Ireland’s first directly elected mayor is being mailed to residents across the city and county of Limerick. The booklet is part of a wider information campaign to raise awareness about what the new role of directly elected Mayor will entail, what powers and responsibilities the new role will have, and what the key differences will be between the previous system and the new system.

The people of Limerick are set to make history by being the first voters in Ireland to directly elect a Mayor for their city and county. This comes after the people of Limerick voted by plebiscite in 2019 to have a directly elected Mayor. The legislation to allow for this was signed into law on 6 March 2024, and the election will now take place alongside local and European elections on 7 June 2024.

A public information campaign co-ordinated by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in conjunction with Limerick City and County Council has been highly visible throughout Limerick in recent weeks with advertisements featuring in local print, media, and outdoor advertising, as well as digital, social media and radio.

Minister of State with responsibility for Local Government and Planning, Alan Dillon TD today emphasised:

“This will be an historic vote for the people of Limerick. They will be the first people in the country to have an opportunity to directly elect a mayor for their city and county. Having a Mayor with executive powers is a significant reform for local government in Ireland, so it’s important that people have a good understanding of what this new role will involve and what it will mean for their area. This booklet, building on a comprehensive information campaign we have been running over the last few weeks, will provide a comprehensive guide to how this new position will work. I would urge people to read it and be sure to have their say - and make history - on June 7.”

“There is already great interest and discussion in Limerick about the directly elected Mayor, but we want to ensure that everyone has enough information regarding the new office of Mayor which they will be voting for in June. Limerick City & County Council has worked closely with the Department to produce this Information Booklet. I am proud that this county will be making history in June and I would encourage everyone to engage with the information provided.”

The print version of the information booklet is currently being mailed to all residents within the Limerick city and county electoral area, but a digital version can also be viewed or downloaded in both English and Irish from the Limerick City and County Council website:
