Limerick City and County Council is delighted to showcase family friendly walking trails in Kilmallock, Killeedy and Adare, and to highlight a wide variety of routes for all abilities with the launch of Limerick on Foot 2026.

The county-wide walking initiative kicks off as many people turn their focus to healthier habits, fresh air and outdoor activity following the festive season.

The new Limerick on Foot 2026 Guide features 33 walking trails - 27 in County Limerick and 6 in Limerick city - highlighting a wide range of walking opportunities from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes. Visit Limerick.ie/walking for more.

Limerick on Foot 2026 is spotlighting three family friendly walking trails:

  • Kilmallock Looped Walk
A scenic loop around Kilmallock’s medieval streets and monuments, showcasing the town’s rich history and cultural heritage.

  • Killeedy Eco Park Trail
A peaceful walk through a 13acre community created eco park, featuring native tree planting, biodiversity zones and an outdoor nature-learning space.

  • Adare Village Walking Trail
A gentle route revealing a quieter side of Adare, including a calm riverside stretch along the Maigue with local wildlife and natural beauty.

Each walk is supported by printed maps and activity sheets, video content, social media promotion and a widely available printed guide outlining routes and information, offering opportunities for people to get up and get moving whether walking, running or wheeling.

The initiative has been delivered by Limerick City and County Council with the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).

The campaign’s development and rollout were supported by local community groups including Kilmallock Tourism Group and Kilmallock Historical Society; Killeedy Eco Park Group; and Adare Tidy Towns, providing a vital link between the Council and local communities.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran welcomed the launch of the initiative, saying:

“Limerick on Foot is a wonderful example of how we can make Limerick healthier by encouraging people to be active, enjoy their surroundings, and spend more time in environments that support both physical and mental wellbeing. This chimes nicely with my Mayoral Programme’s vision for a More Healthy Limerick, where everyone has the opportunity to improve their health through prevention, community connection, and access to spaces that promote relaxation and exercise.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery commented:

“Limerick on Foot highlights the strength of partnership between the Council and local communities. These walks celebrate local heritage, landscape and community spirit, while encouraging people to enjoy the outdoors in a meaningful and sustainable way.”

Marketing and Communications Manager at Limerick City and County Council, Donn O’Sullivan, added:

“Through engaging content, printed guides and digital promotion, Limerick on Foot aims to inspire people of all abilities to explore Limerick one trail at a time. This year we have put the focus on three walks in Kilmallock, Killeedy and Adare but we also feature trails across the city and county, with something to suit all walkers, groups and families alike. Whether you are starting a new habit or rediscovering local walks, the campaign makes it easy to get involved.”
