Limerick Welcomes Over €1.2 Million To Advance Kilmallock and Rathkeale Projects

  • Former Bank of Ireland building in Rathkeale

Limerick City and County Council warmly welcomes the announcement by Minister Dara Calleary of €1.2 million in funding for two transformative projects in Kilmallock and Rathkeale under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF).

This funding will bring both projects to shovel-ready stage, enabling detailed design, planning, and preparatory work ahead of a future application for capital investment.

The funding includes:

  • €886,200 for the Merchant’s House Site in Kilmallock, which will see the restoration of two sections within the derelict structure into adaptable multi-functional spaces for enterprise and community use, while the Office of Public Works and the National Monuments Service will consolidate and present the late medieval Merchant’s House at the street front.

  • €346,500 for the Former Bank of Ireland building in Rathkeale, a Protected Structure, which will be repurposed to accommodate a mix of office units, co-working spaces, and shared community areas, supporting social inclusion and local enterprise.

These projects are part of a national investment of €20.5 million across 30 landmark rural regeneration initiatives.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:

“Bringing both of these buildings back to life in Kilmallock and Rathkeale are key promises I made when elected. We’ve continued to push both projects since and it’s great to now have additional funding to complement the Mayoral Fund allocations to move these projects forward. The restoration of Merchant’s House and the repurposing of the Rathkeale bank building will breathe new life into these communities and create spaces that serve both economic and social needs.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery said:

“These projects are the result of strong local advocacy and close collaboration between the Council and community groups. The commitment shown by residents, businesses, and local leaders in Kilmallock and Rathkeale has been instrumental in shaping these proposals, and I’m excited to see them advance.”

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly, added:

“We are grateful to Minister Calleary and his Department for recognising the potential of these transformational projects in Rathkeale and Kilmallock. The Council looks forward to working closely with the communities to deliver these projects while ensuring they reflect local needs and aspirations.”

Limerick City and County Council remains committed to supporting rural regeneration and will continue to work in partnership with local stakeholders to deliver impactful projects that enhance quality of life and economic opportunity in our towns and villages across the county.
