Draft Limerick City and Environs Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy

A Draft Limerick City and Environs Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy has been prepared to build on and assist the delivery of the ambitious vision for Limerick, set out in the newly adopted Limerick City and County Development Plan, to create a “Green City Region on the Shannon Estuary connected through people and places”.

The aim is to inform and guide the planning and management of green and blue spaces in Limerick City and Environs, including our rivers, parks and open green spaces, helping drive the transition to a low carbon and climate resilient society.

Limerick City and Environs Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy

Green and blue infrastructure (GBI) is the network of multi-functional natural and semi-natural spaces and corridors in an area.

GBI delivers a vital role in addressing climate change (e.g. through surface water and flood management, storing greenhouse gases, providing habitats for wildlife) whilst providing a wide range of benefits and support to:

  • Society - improving health and well-being, improving air and noise quality, creating attractive and inclusive places to live, expanding social and community cohesion
  • Biodiversity - threading nature into streetscapes, balancing competing demands of recreation with the need to retain biodiversity features within the growing city.
