An authorised person or a member of the Garda Síochána may seize horses in accordance with Section 37 of the Control of Horses Act, 1996. Under the Limerick City and County Council (Control of Horses) Bye-Laws, 2017 seized horses are detained for five days from the date of seizure.
The procedure for reclaiming a seized horse is detailed in the Seizure and Detention Notice. If your horse has been detained you should contact Limerick City and County Council immediately and produce your Equine Identification Document ('Horse Passport') as proof of ownership.
