Limerick City and County Council proudly celebrated the achievements of Limerick’s Tidy Towns groups at a seminar held to kick off the new Tidy Towns season.
The event, which took place at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel in Adare, was designed to prepare local groups for the 2025 Supervalu Tidy Towns Competition.
The Council supported 51 localities that participated in the 2024 Competition, showcasing the dedication and community spirit of Limerick’s residents.
The 2025 Supervalu Tidy Towns Competition was launched on March 24th. Limerick City Tidy Towns and Castleconnell Tidy Towns were both honoured at the launch for their fantastic achievements.
As we embark on another Tidy Towns season, it is essential to recognise the invaluable contributions of these groups in enhancing the physical and social environment of both rural and urban areas in Limerick.
All Tidy Towns activities are carried out on a voluntary basis, focusing on sustainability and biodiversity enhancement projects alongside traditional maintenance tasks.
The seminar provided an excellent networking opportunity for volunteers, who received expert advice from:
- Dr. Christy Boylan, National Tidy Towns Adjudicator & Horticulturist
- Sinead Mc Donnell, Biodiversity Officer, Limerick City and County Council
- Dr. Darren Barry, Community Climate Action Officer, Limerick City and County Council
- Colum Walsh, Community Water Officer, Local Authority Waters Programme
- Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer, Limerick City and County Council
Deputising for the Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Stephen Keary, praised the dedication of the Tidy Towns applicants, saying,
“Limerick had 51 Tidy Towns applicants in 2024. This is a real testament to the passion Limerick people have when it comes to making a positive impact in their area. Tidy Towns committees across Limerick embody a combination of warmth, energy, civic pride, determination, and collaborative spirit, creating a vibrant environment in every corner of the county.”
Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer at Limerick City and County Council, emphasised the importance of supporting these voluntary efforts:
“It is more important than ever to support the voluntary work of Tidy Towns groups and Residents associations throughout Limerick. This is a valuable opportunity for communities to come together throughout the year and undertake sustainable local activities. Then come springtime, applicants for the National Tidy Towns competition have an opportunity to be local ambassadors and showcase within their applications all the fantastic sustainable initiatives ongoing within their communities, including Green-Schools and Green Clubs Programme.”
Participants in the National Tidy Towns competition are offered Pobal funding each year, which helps them undertake further local projects to promote the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. This funding, combined with Limerick initiatives, provides invaluable practical support to our communities.
