As part of the GoGreenRoutes project, Limerick City and County Council, supported a community-led Bioblitz on Saturday 27th May from 11am - 1pm.
The community recorded 148 different species along the Castletroy greenway in just two hours! Species recorded included; trees and plants, spiders, butterflies, birds, bumblebees, and a wide variety of insects.
A bioblitz is an event that focuses on identifying as many species as possible, in a specific area, and over a short period of time. Many of the community and volunteers (approx. 25) arrived with nets, jars, ID swatches, reference books, binoculars, and foldout chairs to observe and record what they saw.
The bioblitz was an opportunity to collect some baseline data, which can be repeated to build a biodiversity map of the greenway overtime! The data also helps to guide how best to enhance biodiversity (habitats and species) as well as nature connection for the community overall.
All species recorded by the community have been submitted to the National Biodiversity Centre.
Thank you to all involved!
