A reception will take place this week to honour the 11 groups from the Newcastle West municipal area who successfully competed in the 2015 National Tidy Towns competition.

All of the 11 groups increased their marks in the competition from the previous year and Limerick City and County Council is delighted to host the event at the Devon Inn, Templeglantine this Thursday, March 3rd at 7pm in honour of their achievements.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the results from the Newcastle West area particularly as each village and town increased its result from 2014,” said Cllr Michael Collins, Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of Newcastle West.

“Newcastle West received a bronze medal and Abbeyfeale received a special Endeavour Award increasing its marks by over 7% compared to last year. The Tidy Towns competition has been a fantastic event inspiring a huge amount of voluntary effort across the County. We want to pay tribute to, and thank the many volunteers who have not only improved their environment, but also helped to cement community relations and build local pride.”

Cllr. Michael Collins will make a presentation of a scroll from the Council to each of the groups to note their success on Thursday night with other local Councillors from the district also in attendance.

Dr. Veronica Santorum from Limerick's Buzzing - an environmental awareness campaign to protect Limerick's wild bee future by protecting their habitats and food sources - will give a talk to the groups on wild bees which will be very relevant to the Wildlife and Natural Amenities category of the Tidy Towns competition.

To recognise Dr Santorum’s work, the Newcastle West municipal district has agreed to distribute seeds for bees and pollinators to local schools in the area.

Gordon Daly, Limerick City and County Council Director for the Newcastle West Municipal District will also be in attendance and will act as MC for the event.
