Round the clock flooding response to continue in Limerick as Storm Jorge approaches

Limerick City and County Council will continue their round-the-clock flooding response in parts of County Limerick impacted by the River Shannon flooding. Council staff, along with Defence Forces personnel and volunteers with Limerick Civil Defence are monitoring the situation and will continue to do so over the weekend.

The flood response will be compounded by the arrival of Storm Jorge which has resulted in two Status YELLOW warnings for Limerick.

The YELLOW Rainfall warning will see rainfall accumulations generally between 20 to 30mm expected during Friday and Saturday, but 40 to 50 mm possible in mountainous areas, with a continuing risk of flooding due to already saturated ground and elevated river levels.

The Rainfall warning is valid until midnight Saturday night/ Sunday morning (29 Feb 2020).

The YELLOW Wind warning is in effect as strong winds extend across the country during Saturday morning and persist through the rest of the day and into the night. Southwest veering westerly winds of mean speeds 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h expected.

The Wind Warning is valid from 9am on Saturday (29/02/2020) until 3am on Sunday (01/03/2020).

There has been no change to the rate of discharge of water at Parteen Weir today (28/02/2020).

However we expect that river levels will increase in the coming days due to heavy rainfall forecast over the weekend from Storm Jorge.

This may result in some roads becoming impassable for periods. Motorists are reminded not to drive through floodwater unless it is safe to do so and plan making their journey using another route.

The road in Castleconnell from Charco’s to World’s End and Castleconnell Boat Club remains closed.

The Plassey Park Road has re-opened to traffic.

In particular motorists needing to detour from the R525 (Daly’s Cross to O’Briensbridge) should use the Regional and National route network where possible.

The cycleway/ walkway from Irish Estates, through to the Guinness Bridge, and on to UL remains closed until further notice as does the Red Path in Corbally.

Limerick City and County Council will continue to monitor flood levels on the Shannon and their impact.

The Council is also urging people in other parts of Limerick to be mindful and careful as Storm Jorge arrives. Flash flooding may appear as all lands are currently saturated and trees may be uprooted as a result of high winds.

For issues relating to roads, storms and flooding, Limerick City and County Council’s Out of Hours contact (non-emergency contact) is 061-417833.

Limerick City and County Council is continuing to work with the HSE and An Garda Síochána as part of the Local Co-ordination Group.
