Limerick City and County Council is commencing the statutory Part 8 public consultation process for a proposed canopy structure at Quimper Square on Cruises Street on 4 September 2026.
The proposal comprises the construction of a landmark canopy structure and associated public realm works at Quimper Square, located at the heart of Cruises Street. The canopy is intended to create a focal point within Cruises Street, providing a flexible civic space capable of hosting a range of activities and events.
In June 2026, Limerick City and County Council undertook a non-statutory public consultation process on the canopy proposal. This included a public drop-in event at the Citizen Innovation Lab and an online consultation through the MyPoint.limerick.ie portal, providing an opportunity for residents, businesses and other stakeholders to review the emerging design and provide feedback.
Statutory notices for the proposed development will be published on 4 September 2026, commencing the statutory public consultation period under the Part 8 process.
Members of the public are invited to review the plans and supporting documentation in Merchant’s Quay and Dooradoyle council offices, as well as online on MyPoint, and make submissions or observations before the consultation period closes at 4.00pm on 16 October 2026.

About the Part 8 Process
The Part 8 process is the statutory procedure used by local authorities to seek approval for certain development projects they propose to undertake. It includes a period of public consultation, during which submissions and observations can be made. Following consideration of all feedback received, the proposal is brought before the elected members of Limerick City and County Council for a decision. The process helps ensure transparency, public participation and democratic oversight in the delivery of local authority projects.
