As the summer season nears its end, Limerick City and County Council provides a useful reminder to prepare for longer journey times, with holidays in the rear-view mirror and with children heading back to school.
Traffic volumes on roads across the city and county will increase in the coming weeks and the message to motorists is to be street smart and plan accordingly.
To optimise travel time during peak hours, commuters are advised to plan their route in advance, considering any potential disruptions and changes to road layouts as a result of works during the summer period.
Prepare for the new term by exploring public transport options or by availing of the always improving Active Travel infrastructure that is making it safer to bike or take a scooter on many of Limerick’s busiest routes.
Director of Transportation, Mobility and Public Realm at Limerick City and County Council, Patricia Liddy advises all commuters to plan their journeys:
“As students, pupils and staff return for the new academic year, traffic volumes are expected to increase across roads throughout Limerick city and county. Maintaining and improving our road network is a year-round priority, and many routes may have undergone maintenance or upgrades over the summer months. I would encourage all road users to plan ahead, consider alternative routes where appropriate, stay alert and familiarise themselves with any changes to road layouts, traffic management measures or road closures that could affect their daily journeys.”
In Limerick City Centre diversions remain in place to facilitate closures of The Crescent on O’Connell Avenue until Monday 31 August.
Every effort is being made to minimise the impact on traffic flow.
Here are some changes and road advisory notices to be aware of:
- The Crescent, O’Connell Avenue will reopen on Monday 31 August. The closure is to facilitate Public Realm Enhancement and events to animate Limerick City.
- The R513 Knocklong will have a temporary traffic management operation in place until Friday 04 September from 8:00am to 5:00pm daily.
- The R663 Moor Abbey Bridge will be closed due to Bridge Rehabilitation Works until Monday 9th November. The Bridge will be impassable to road users.
- Bridge Rehabilitation Works will be taking place on the N21 – Adare Maigue RiverBridge, Adare, Co. Limerick near Adare Village.
- M21 Adare to Attyflin – Works will continue on the construction of the new Motorway between Adare and Attyflin with the traffic management that is currently in place remaining and being modified over the coming months, to facilitate the continued construction of the project.
- L-1420, (Woodlands Road), Adare will be closed to facilitate Irish Water to install a new watermain between 8:00am to 6:00pm between 21st September and 30 October.
- N69 Road overlay works ongoing between Clarina village and Court cross Kildimo between 8am and 5pm daily until 18th September.
Active Travel projects on site
- South Circular Road Active Travel Scheme
South Circular Road is currently closed to vehicular entry from Ballinacurra Road to facilitate construction works. To accommodate access to the schools, the road will remain open during the morning school drop-off period, with the closure taking effect shortly afterwards and a diversion in place via New Street.
- Old Cratloe Road Active Travel Scheme
Works are continuing at various locations along the Old Cratloe Road. Temporary stop/go traffic management between Redgate Road and Caherdavin Meadows is expected to conclude this week, after which two-way traffic will be maintained.
- Corbally Road Safe Routes to School Scheme (R463)
Works are ongoing at the entrance to St. Munchin's College. Access to the school will remain available throughout the works, with both pedestrian and vehicular access maintained.
- St. Paul's to Ballykeeffe Roundabout Active Travel Scheme
Works are currently confined to footpath improvements in the vicinity of St. Paul's Church on R526 near St. Paul’s Roundabout. Temporary pedestrian access arrangements are in place.
- TUS to City Centre Active Travel Scheme
Works are ongoing between the pedestrian crossing on Sexton Street North and High Road, between Thomond Pharmacy and the junction with Belfield Court. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the works, with occasional stop/go traffic management in operation where required to facilitate construction activities. Works are ongoing near Gaelscoil Sáirséal on Shelbourne Road (R464). School access will remain available throughout the construction period, with alternative pedestrian routes provided where required and traffic management measures in place to facilitate the safe delivery of the works.
