Limerick Sports Partnership is delighted to announce the launch of five new FitSticks Activator Walking Trails across Limerick, providing local communities with a new and accessible way to improve their health, wellbeing and physical activity. FitSticks Trails are suitable for both Activator and Nordic Walking.
The new trail network has been developed at:
- O'Brien Park, Clare Street
- Riverbank-Canal Bank
- Shelbourne Park
- Mungret Park
- Castle Demesne, Newcastle West
The FitSticks Activator Walking Trails combine walking with specially designed poles, helping people engage both the upper and lower body while walking. The trails include guided exercises and activities designed to support balance, mobility, posture, strength and confidence.
The launch marks an exciting addition to Limerick's growing network of opportunities for people to become more active in their local communities.
To celebrate the launch, Limerick Sports Partnership will deliver a series of free introductory Activator Walking programmes at each trail location throughout June. Starting June 9th in Newcastle West and O’Brien Park Clare Street/Riverbank, June 10th in Mungret Park, and June 12th in Shelbourne Park. These programmes will provide people with the opportunity to learn the Activator Walking technique, experience the trails, and discover the benefits of walking with FitSticks under the guidance of qualified instructors.
Ryan Meaney, Physical Activity for Health Officer at Limerick Sports Partnership, said:
"These new FitSticks Walking Trails provide an exciting opportunity for people across Limerick to become more active in a safe, accessible and enjoyable way. Activator Walking is suitable for all ages and abilities and offers a simple way to improve balance, mobility, strength and overall wellbeing while enjoying the outdoors. We are delighted to bring this new community resource to Limerick and encourage everyone to come along and try one of our free launch programmes. I would like to thank the HSE for their collaboration with the Physical Activity for Health programme of work in Limerick Sports Partnership to date, and also to Limerick City and County Council on their support for the FitSticks Trails. Now it’s time to get out and get active!"
Activator Walking is particularly beneficial for adults looking to maintain or improve mobility, confidence and physical activity levels, while also providing an enjoyable social activity that can be enjoyed in local parks and community spaces.
Each trail features a FitSticks no-cost rental scheme, allowing users to access poles and enjoy the guided trail experience independently.
Participants taking part in the launch programmes will learn correct Activator Walking technique, how to use the FitSticks safely and effectively, the health benefits of Activator Walking, and how to access and use the trail network independently.
Limerick Sports Partnership is inviting members of the public to learn more about the trails and register for one of the free launch programmes by visiting www.limericksports.ie.
