Limerick City and County Council has formally signed the construction contract for a new social housing development in Annacotty, marking an important step in the delivery of high‑quality, age‑friendly homes within the community.
Martins Construction will deliver the project, off Mulcair Drive, which will provide six new two‑bedroom social housing units, with elderly and mobility‑impaired residents identified as potential end users.
The development is funded by the Department of Housing Local Government and Heritage’s Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP).
The single‑storey homes will be arranged in three pairs of semi‑detached units and constructed to a high standard, incorporating durable materials and finishes that reflect the character of the surrounding residential area.
Speaking at the contract signing, Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:
“This contract signing represents steady progress in delivering much‑needed, age-friendly, social housing for Limerick. The scheme is modest in scale but high in quality, with a strong focus on accessibility, sustainability and integration with the existing neighbourhood.”
Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery added:
“The delivery of age‑friendly, universally designed homes such as these supports people to live independently, close to local services, public transport and community life, and reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to meeting housing need across the county.”
Director General, Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly said:
“This is a carefully designed, small‑scale scheme that responds to local need while respecting its surroundings. Projects like this demonstrate how we can achieve quality, accessibility and sustainability within existing communities, maximising the use of serviced land in line with the Limerick Development Plan.”
The development is located off Mulcair Drive, accessed via the Dublin Road, within the established settlement of Annacotty. Nearby services, public transport and the village centre are all within easy walking distance.
A 16 month programme of works is expected to commence shortly.
