The Integrated Urban Strategy (IUS)

The King’s Island Walled Town Integrated Urban Strategy is a community-focused framework aimed at revitalising Limerick’s historic core, centred on the old medieval walled town of King’s Island.

Supported through THRIVE – the Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme, the strategy enhanced the previous King’s Island Walled Town Framework by promoting heritage conservation, adaptive reuse of vacant and derelict buildings, and high-quality public realm improvements.

The King’s Island Walled Town Integrated Urban Strategy identifies priority projects, ranging from streetscape upgrades and waterfront enhancements to the rejuvenation of key strategic sites, to support sustainable urban regeneration, increase footfall, foster local employment, and strengthen the area’s cultural identity. A central principle of the strategy is citizen-led engagement, with multidisciplinary collaboration guiding its vision.

Several strategic sites within the study area are highlighted for renewal or improvement, including the Fireplace Site, Verdant Place, the Convent Site, the Orchard Site, and the Potato Market, each offering opportunities for new public spaces, mixed-use activity, or heritage led regeneration. These projects aim to reactivate underused locations, improve accessibility, and reinforce the historic character of King’s Island.
