Limerick Communities Gear Up for 2026 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition

Limerick preparations for the 2026 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition have commenced with the annual Limerick Tidy Towns Seminar, held at Limerick City and County Council’s Council Chamber in Dooradoyle.

Participation from Limerick communities continues to grow, with 57 entries recorded in 2025, a highly encouraging number of entrants that reflects the strong commitment of communities across the city and county.

Each Tidy Towns entrant receives funding through Pobal, with groups currently meeting to identify and progress projects focused on waste prevention, biodiversity enhancement and the delivery of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the coming weeks, the Limerick Going for Gold Environment and Climate Action Grant and Competition will be launched. Together with Pobal funding, these vital supports will have a visible and positive sustainable impact across Limerick throughout the 2026 Tidy Towns campaign.

As another Tidy Towns season begins, it is important to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of Limerick Tidy Towns groups and residents’ associations. Their voluntary efforts significantly enrich both the physical and social environment of Limerick. Activities include participation in National Spring Clean and Team Limerick Clean-Up, essential maintenance works, and the delivery of locally driven sustainable initiatives that strengthen communities.

This year’s seminar provided volunteers with a valuable networking and advice clinic, featuring the following expert presentations:

  • Debbie Bailey, National Tidy Towns Adjudicator – “Turning Good Work into Good Marks: Tidy Towns Application Do’s, Don’ts and Key Categories”
  • Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer, Limerick City and County Council – “Sustainable Practical Supports for Tidy Towns Groups”
  • Elaine O’Connor, Ryder Cup Coordinator, Limerick City and County Council – “Limerick Tidy Towns Engagement for the Ryder Cup Event”
  • Dr Simon Jennings, Executive Scientist, Limerick City Council – “A Soundscape Approach to Investigating Green Spaces”
  • Kate Janeczek, Staff Officer, Limerick City and County Council – Limerick Going for Gold Environment and Climate Action Improvement Grant and Competition 2026

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is wishing well to all Limerick Tidy Towns groups, saying:

“I want to commend every Tidy Towns group and volunteer across Limerick for their ongoing commitment to improving their communities. Their voluntary efforts enhance our towns and villages, strengthen community pride and deliver real environmental benefits. I wish all participating groups the very best of luck in the 2026 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition and thank them for the positive impact they continue to make throughout the city and county.”

Chair of the Adare Tidy Towns Committee, Cllr Bridie Collins deputised for the Príomh Chomhairleoir at the seminar, and commented:

“I thank the Council for once again hosting this seminar, which was extremely informative and full of practical advice that communities can immediately apply. In Adare, we have worked hard to maintain our standards in the national Tidy Towns competition, and that progress reflects a sustained community effort supported by good guidance and funding. What we have achieved is simply an example of what communities right across Limerick can do with the right support. I want to take this opportunity to wish every Tidy Towns group in Limerick the very best of luck in their endeavours for the 2026 season.”

Helen Kenneally, Environmental Awareness Officer with Limerick City and County Council, commented:

“The 2026 Tidy Towns seminar placed a strong focus on the practical supports available to assist the fantastic voluntary work being undertaken by communities across Limerick. Each year, participants in the national Tidy Towns competition receive Pobal funding, and Limerick communities are given a boost from the extra benefit with the Limerick Going for Gold programme and other supports highlighted at the seminar, providing invaluable assistance to our communities. We salute Limerick’s Tidy Towns volunteers and wish them every success.”
