Memberships at the Limerick City and County Council owned Grove Island Leisure Centre have more than doubled after a major refurbishment and expansion project. There are now 2200 subscribed members compared to 945 twelve months ago.

A plaque has been unveiled by Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD at a ceremony to mark the completion of the significant programme of works by Martins Construction Ltd. with PUNCH Consulting as the design lead team. In all, €1.85 Million has been invested.

The upgrades deliver a modern, accessible, and more energy-efficient facility, featuring a refurbished swimming pool deck, enhanced changing village and wellness areas, and an expanded gym with state-of-the-art equipment. Alongside improved lighting, ventilation, and finishes, the works incorporate sustainable design and energy-saving systems, creating a safer, greener, and more welcoming environment for the community.

Four additional full-time staff have been hired as a result of the increased footfall bringing the staff complement to 40. Grove Island Leisure Centre is owned by Grove Island Leisure Centre Ltd, now a subsidiary of Discover Limerick DAC. The Designated Activity Company was set up by Limerick City and County Council to operate and develop key tourism attractions to strengthen Limerick as a visitor destination.

The leisure facility remains affordable and accessible with membership and pay-as-you-go options. It is the only pay-as-you-go pool and gym facility of its kind in the vicinity.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran welcomed the completion of the works, saying:

“Grove Island Leisure Centre has long been a focal point for sport and wellbeing in Limerick. The upgrades completed over the past year enhance the experience for all who use the centre, from swimmers and gym users to families taking part in lessons and activities. The ethos of affordability ensures more people have access to a quality facility. It is fantastic to see it grow in memberships and in the number of people employed here. This investment reflects our commitment to strengthening community infrastructure across Limerick.”

The total investment of €1.85 million was funded primarily through the Council’s own resources, supplemented by €500,000 from the Community Sports Facilities Fund.  Aura Leisure, the facility’s long-term operator, invested €340,000 in state-of-the-art gym equipment.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the refurbished Centre, Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD, highlighted the success of the project and its impact on community sports:

“I am delighted to unveil this plaque marking the completion of the refurbishment of Grove Island Leisure Centre. This project is a great example of how the Community Sport Facilities Fund is delivering improved facilities for communities across the country, supporting healthier lifestyles, community participation, and access to quality sporting opportunities. The next Irish swimming champions could well come from Limerick city and county, and we need to ensure that they get every opportunity to reach their potential."

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery was impressed by the enhancements at the leisure centre, saying:

“It’s fantastic to see so many people embracing a healthier lifestyle thanks to the upgrades at Grove Island Leisure Centre. This is a first-class facility for the northside of the city, offering employment opportunities alongside gym and swim classes for all ages. Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering a project that will benefit the community for many years to come.”

“The successful delivery of this project is the result of strong collaboration between the Council, Aura Leisure and the teams involved in planning and construction. I want to thank the public for their continued support during the works. It is great to know that so many more people are now getting the benefit of this leisure centre thanks to the enhanced facilities.
