Limerick Greenway Achieves Prestigious European Greenways Recognition

  • Limerick Greenway wins at European Greenways Awards 2025

Limerick Greenway has achieved international recognition after being awarded third prize in the Excellence category at the 12th European Greenways Awards ceremony, held in Abanto-Zierbena, Basque Country, Spain.

Organised by the European Greenways Association (EGWA) in collaboration with Basquetour – Basque Tourism Agency, the Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the awards celebrate outstanding greenway projects across Europe that promote sustainable tourism, active mobility, and community development.

Limerick Greenway was recognised for its transformative impact on rural regeneration, tourism, and wellbeing. Developed by Limerick City and County Council, the 40km off-road trail repurposes the former Limerick–Tralee railway line, connecting Rathkeale, Ardagh, Newcastle West, Barnagh, Templeglantine, and Abbeyfeale.

Since opening in 2021, Limerick Greenway has welcomed over 680,000 users to-date, contributed significantly to the local economy, and provided meaningful social benefits to the community. It features age-friendly infrastructure, accessible paths, heritage restoration, and inclusive amenities such as U-Turn audio installations with Irish Sign Language interpretation.

The project has received €10 million in initial capital investment, including funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Department of Transport and Fáilte Ireland. The Limerick Greenway Hub @ Rathkeale was officially opened on 19th September 2025, while works on the Barnagh Station House are expected to be completed in early 2026. Design work is currently underway for additional hubs in Ardagh and Newcastle West, which will further enhance Limerick Greenway’s role as a regional tourism and community asset.

Deputising for the Mayor of Limerick at the event, Cllr. Micheal Collins, Leas-Phríomh Chomhairleoir & Cathaoirleach Municipal District of Newcastle West, added:

"Limerick Greenway is a fantastic asset for our district and for County Limerick. It has brought new life to our towns and villages, supported local businesses, and created a space where people of all ages can enjoy the outdoors. This award is a proud moment for our community and a recognition of what we can achieve together."

Eileen Coleman, Senior Executive Officer at Limerick City and County Council, said:

"Receiving this award is a testament to the collaborative team effort behind Limerick Greenway. From planning and design to community engagement and delivery, every step was guided by a commitment to excellence and sustainability. We’re thrilled to see Limerick Greenway celebrated as a model for rural regeneration and active travel."

Stephane Duclot, Director of Service at Limerick City and County Council, commented:

"Limerick Greenway is a shining example of how strategic investment in green infrastructure can transform communities. This award reflects the vision, dedication, and collaboration that brought the project to life. We are proud to see West Limerick recognised on the European stage for its innovation, inclusivity, and impact."
