Limerick City and County Council Encourages Participation in “Safe & Sound” Online Training Portal to Strengthen Night-Time Economy

  • Crowds of people gathered at outdoor event Twilight Thursdays Limerick

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) encourages all businesses, staff, volunteers, and creatives to take part in the Limerick Safe & Sound Online Training Portal, a free, accessible platform designed to support businesses, workers, and community members involved in the evening and night-time economy across Limerick city and county.

The Safe & Sound portal is also a valuable resource for educational institutes, sports clubs, youth clubs, social clubs and any group or organisation that engages with or participates in, evening or night-time activities.

This initiative is part of a national campaign launched by Minister for Culture, Communications, and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, aimed at tackling key safety challenges in nightlife settings.

The training is available free for 12 months and is open to people across Limerick city and county.

Developed in collaboration with the Night-Time Economy Solutions Academy, the portal offers express 30-minute modules covering:

  • Anti-Sexual Harassment
  • Bystander Intervention
  • Drink Spiking Awareness
  • Safeguarding and Vulnerability
  • Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG)

In addition to training, the initiative provides 17 policy templates tailored to Irish law and frontline realities, offering practical guidance for venues such as pubs, restaurants, hotels, theatres, festivals, gyms, and taxi services.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented:

“As we welcome the return of third-level students and continue to build momentum around initiatives like Twilight Thursdays, it’s clear that Limerick’s Night-Time Economy is evolving in exciting ways. But with that growth comes responsibility. The Safe & Sound training portal is a fantastic resource that gives us greater comfort that our city remains safe after dark. I strongly encourage businesses, students, volunteers, and anyone engaging in evening activities to take advantage of this free training and be part of the positive change happening across Limerick.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Catherine Slattery added:

“As we move into the latter half of the year and daylight hours begin to shorten, it’s more important than ever to ensure our night-time spaces are safe and welcoming. The Safe & Sound portal offers practical, accessible guidance. It’s a timely and valuable resource that supports a culture of care and responsibility across our city and county towns and villages.”

Dr Pat Daly, Director General of Limerick City and County Council, said:

“Creating a safe night-time environment isn’t just about policies, it’s about people. The Safe & Sound portal gives us a chance to build a shared understanding of what safety looks like in Limerick after dark. We want everyone to feel welcome, respected, and protected, whether they’re out enjoying a show, working a shift, or simply walking home.”

Craig Power, Night-Time Economy Advisor for Limerick City and County Council, commented:

“The Safe & Sound portal is a powerful tool for change. It empowers our night-time economy stakeholders with the knowledge and confidence to create safer, more inclusive spaces. Whether you’re running a venue, working in hospitality, or simply passionate about Limerick’s night-time culture, this training is for you.”

The portal is designed to be flexible and user-friendly, allowing participants to complete modules at their own pace and earn certification that demonstrates their commitment to safety and excellence.
