“I declare John Moran, Mayor of Limerick!” - Returning Officer Caroline Curley’s declaration, and subsequent celebrations at the Limerick Count Centre are captured in a new video produced on behalf of Limerick City and County Council.
John Moran, who ran as an independent candidate, made history by becoming the first ever directly elected mayor in Limerick and in Ireland.
It followed two days of sorting and counting of 81,668 ballot papers by the diligent count staff at Limerick Racecourse. The use of time lapse video gives a sense of the marathon task involved.
Videographer Donal Glackin’s production also captures the mood on the second day, as five remaining candidates await a final result.
