At the 14th annual Burial Grounds Awards, Limerick City and County Council recognised the commitment and dedication of groups, associations, and individuals in their respective communities.
There are two categories of awards with Mahoonagh Beg Burial Ground being named overall winner in the Ancient Category, while Glenroe Burial Ground took the overall winner title in the Modern Category.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell commented:
“Limerick City and County Council is grateful to all those who, day in and day out, week after week, tirelessly maintain the local burial grounds across Limerick. I want to acknowledge all the communities, burial ground committees, caretakers, and parish councils responsible for the upkeep of Limerick's 250 cemeteries. Your work not only ensures the physical care of these grounds but also reflects the enduring influence of our loved ones who have departed. May your invaluable work continue to flourish, enriching our communities and preserving the legacies of those who came before us.”
Mayor Mitchell continued:
“Collaborating with entities like Ballyhoura Development, West Limerick Resources, Limerick Civic Trust, and participants and supervisors of FAS, TUS, and RSS schemes, you collectively contribute to the preservation and maintenance of these sacred spaces.”
Limerick City and County Council recognises the desire of people to be buried in their own localities. In 2023 the extension to Ballylanders Burial ground was completed. A Muslim burial ground was developed in Patrickswell, and construction of the extension to Askeaton burial ground is underway. The Council remain committed to securing further sites to meet the community's needs.
