Blueprint for future development of Limerick unveiled

Draft Limerick Development Plan outlines high level priorities for next six years.

Limerick City and County Council has unveiled the first ever combined Draft Development Plan for Limerick.

The Draft Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028 sets out the blueprint for the physical, socio-economic and environmental development of Limerick over a six-year period up to 2028 and beyond and will set out the overall strategy for the proper planning and sustainable development of the city and county as a whole.

The draft Limerick Development Plan was agreed by the 40 councillors following 10 detailed workshops and three special meetings of the Council.

The Draft Plan is now on public display from today (Saturday 26 June) to Monday 06 September 2021, and is available to view online on Limerick.ie platform.

It is available to view in Council offices in Merchant’s Quay, Dooradoyle, Newcastle West, Kilmallock and Rathkeale.

Due to Covid-19 health guidelines, you must book an appointment to view the Draft Plan in the Council offices.

The Draft Plan is also available at branches across Limerick’s Libraries network.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Collins said: “This plan is crucially important for the future development of Limerick. A huge amount of work has gone into compiling this draft plan, with local elected representatives meeting regularly to debate the contents.

“But the draft also needs input from the people of Limerick. Maybe there is something we have overlooked or maybe you have a different but important point of view that needs to be highlighted, I am encouraging you to take the time and look at the Draft Limerick Development Plan and make a submission and let us know your position.”

Maria Woods, Senior Planner with Limerick City and County Council said: “The Draft Limerick Development Plan sets out a blueprint for the future development of the social, economic, physical and environmental infrastructure across Limerick.

“We've set out a number of objectives in the Draft Plan and what is required for the future development, but we need the input of the public, at this stage of the plan process”.

As part of the draft process public meetings will be held, by appointment only and subject to government guidance in relation to Covid-19, on the following dates:

A webinar will also be hosted by Limerick City and County Council on Thursday 15 July 2021 at 6pm, on the Draft Limerick Development Plan 2022–2028, log onto Limerick.ie/Limerick-Development-Plan for more information.

Members of the public are now being invited to have their say about the Draft Limerick Development Plan by making a submission or observation.

This can be done through the Council’s online consultation portal MyPoint, email: devplan@limerick.ie or post: Forward Planning, Limerick City and County Council, Merchant’s Quay, Limerick V94 EH90.

The consultation period is open now until Monday 06 September 2021.

While the Limerick Development Plan is a large document, it has been divided into six volumes to make it easier to read:

  • Volume 1: Written Statement
  • Volume 2: Settlements and Zoning Maps
  • Volume 3: Record of Protected Structures and Architectural Conservation Areas
  • Volume 4: Strategic Environmental Assessment, Strategic Flood Risk Assessment and Appropriate Assessment/ Natura Impact Statement
  • Volume 5: Designated Sites and Record of Monuments and Preservation Orders
  • Volume 6: Housing Strategy, including Housing Need Demand Assessment, Retail Strategy, Building Height Strategy, Strategic Integrated Framework Plan for the Shannon Estuary and a review and update of the Limerick 2030 – A Spatial and Economic Strategy.

The Draft Limerick Development Plan also includes amendments to the Record of Protected of Structures.

The- Draft Plan will also incorporate the functional areas which are currently covered by the Bruff, Hospital, Cappamore, Kilfinane, Castletroy and the Southern Environs Local Area Plans. Upon adoption of the new Limerick Development Plan, these Local Area Plans will be revoked.
