Summer in the City is Bringing More People, More Activity and More Reasons to Visit Limerick

As Summer in the City heads into its third weekend, Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is inviting people to make the most of the free events, reimagined public spaces and city centre experiences that have been bringing extra life and activity to Limerick throughout August.

Funded through the 2026 Mayoral Fund, the initiative has been developed in consultation with local businesses and stakeholders to encourage more people to visit the city centre, spend longer there and explore.

It’s business as usual with some added value in Limerick city centre this August, with easy access to shops, cafés, restaurants, cultural venues and Summer in the City events across the city.

Only limited traffic management measures are in place to facilitate specific activations, and there are multiple routes into the city centre for visitors. Road notices, maps and visitor information can be found at Limerick.ie/summer.

Free parking is also available for the remaining weekends in August at the Limerick City and County Council Car Park (behind Merchant's Quay), accessed via Nicholas Street (after 4pm on Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday).

More Spaces to Enjoy

  • The Crescent on O'Connell Avenue has been transformed with seating and greening into Daniel's Garden Lounge - a nod to “The Liberator” Daniel O'Connell - creating a welcoming space for people to gather, have a picnic, an outdoor meeting or just watch the world go by, surrounded by beautiful Georgian architecture in this historic part of the city.
  • Lower Glentworth Street has undergone a similar transformation and, under the moniker The Glentworth Social, is creating another attractive city centre space to kick back and relax.
  • Steamboat Quay's Urban Beach continues to provide a popular riverside destination to soak up the summer atmosphere in the heart of the city.
  • Additionally, Back Lane, has been transformed into The Hop Garden, a pedestrianised cultural and social space, with Mother Mac's providing activations.
  • Nicholas Street in Limerick’s Medieval Quarter has also been coming alive each weekend in August with Treaty City Brewery’s One Fomhar D’road Festival bringing live music, street theatre and community-focused events helping to animate the historic quarter.

A Superblock pilot trial also continues within Limerick's Georgian neighbourhood each Sunday in August, encompassing the area from Cecil Street to Barrington Street and from Pery Street, Davis Street and Baker Place to O'Connell Street.

Using temporary planters and signage, the initiative aims to create a more welcoming and people-focused environment. There are no road closures associated with the trial, and access for residents, businesses and visitors is being maintained throughout.

More Activity

Complementing these enhanced public spaces is a programme of free events, performances and family activities taking place across the city throughout August.

From this Saturday the Xtreme Funfair will offer thrills at Arthur’s Quay Park while the Dancing the Walls of Limerick one day festival celebrates heritage and community in medieval surroundings on Sunday. Music Generation Limerick City also present a Sound Safari at the Crescent, O’Connell Avenue and there is a unique open air photography experience with the Analogue Photographers of Limerick.

There are also a number of community-led initiatives that will animate the spaces and add to the vibrancy.
