Limerick City and County Council announced that construction of the South Circular Road Active Travel Scheme will commence on 20 July 2026, with Sorensen Civil Engineering appointed as the contractor to deliver the project.
The South Circular Road Active Travel Scheme will provide improved walking, wheeling and cycling facilities connecting the wider Dooradoyle and Raheen areas with Limerick City Centre via South Circular Road and Henry Street. The scheme extends from the junction of Ballinacurra Road and South Circular Road, runs along South Circular Road and Henry Street, and terminates at Bishops Quay.
The project will deliver improved pedestrian facilities, such as upgraded footpaths and improved crossing points, new cycling facilities, junction improvements, road resurfacing and associated public realm work. Once complete, the scheme will provide a more attractive route for people travelling between residential areas, schools, workplaces, healthcare facilities, local businesses and the city centre.
Active Travel infrastructure is delivered through individual schemes that together create a connected network. The South Circular Road Active Travel Scheme is a key link in a strategic corridor connecting the communities of Dooradoyle and Raheen with Limerick City Centre. The scheme builds on completed active travel infrastructure on Father Russell Road, St. Nessan's Road and the R510 corridor, with the link between St. Paul's and Ballykeeffe roundabouts currently under construction. Through connections via Baggot Estate, Childers Road and Hyde Road, the wider network also provides links towards the University of Limerick, Colbert Station and other key destinations across the city. Supported by funding from the National Transport Authority, the scheme represents another step in the delivery of a safe and connected network for walking, wheeling and cycling across Limerick.
Construction will begin on 20 July 2026 and will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption where possible. Initial works will commence simultaneously at two locations: on South Circular Road between Fennessy's and Scoil Mháthair Dé, and on Henry Street between its junctions with St. Alphonsus Street and O'Curry Street.
Works are anticipated to take place Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 8.00pm, and on Saturdays between 9.00am and 4.00pm.
