The Mayor of Limerick and Limerick City and County Council wish to advise the public that a Superblock Pilot Trial will take place on Sundays only during July and August 2026. The trial will commence this Sunday, 5 July 2026 and continue each Sunday until Sunday, 30 August 2026, inclusive (9 Sundays).
What is a Superblock?
A Superblock is an urban transport planning concept that manages vehicle movement within a defined area by restricting through traffic while maintaining access for local residents, businesses and public transport. Service vehicles, deliveries, taxis and emergency services are not restricted.
By reducing unnecessary through traffic, Superblocks can help create a quieter, safer and more attractive urban environment. The concept seeks to enhance the public realm and encourage greater use of streets and public spaces by residents, businesses and visitors.
Trial Area:
The pilot trial will be carried out within the Georgian Area of Limerick City and will extend:
From Cecil Street to Barrington Street (north-south); and
From Pery Street, Davis Street and Baker Place to O’Connell Street (east-west)
How the Trial Will Operate?
Access points to the Superblock will be identified by temporary street planters and directional signage positioned near junctions, creating clearly defined gateway entry points to the area.
The planters and signage will be installed early each Sunday morning and removed early on the following Monday morning for the duration of the pilot trial.
There are no road closures associated with this pilot trial, and local access will be maintained at all times.
Purpose of the Trial:
This pilot trial is intended to assess traffic and transport movements, driver behaviour, travel choices and the impact of reduced through traffic within the area. It will also help gauge the views and experiences of residents, businesses and visitors.
The findings of the trial will assist Limerick City and County Council in informing future transport planning, sustainable mobility initiatives and public realm improvements within Limerick City.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Limerick City and County Council has engaged and consulted with Bus Éireann, An Garda Síochána and the Emergency Services in advance of the trial.
On-site vehicle movement assessments have also been undertaken through the proposed Superblock gateway locations to ensure continued accessibility, operational effectiveness and continuity of service.
Limerick City and County Council has also presented the ‘Superblock’ concept to the to the Chamber of Commerce and engaged with local residents and business within the area.
