Limerick City and County Council has taken a significant step forward in its urban renewal plans with the signing of the Integrated Design Team contract for the Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project.

This milestone marks the beginning of an ambitious transformation aimed at enhancing the heart of Limerick’s city centre, creating vibrant, accessible, and sustainable public spaces.

The appointed design team, Egis Engineering Ireland Ltd., will lead the design and development of high-quality streetscapes and public areas that celebrate Limerick’s unique character and heritage while supporting economic growth and community engagement.  The project will focus on improving the pedestrian experience, integrating green infrastructure, and fostering a welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

The proposed project is being delivered by Limerick City and County Council’s Place Making Department and is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA), underlining the projects importance as part of Limerick’s long-term vision for the city centre.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, commented:

Who does not love our Milk Market, which is such a special place especially on Saturday mornings, but it can be much more, as can the whole area. The signing of this contract is a clear signal of Limerick’s ambition. This is a project that I have been happy to have been involved in as it has progressed to this point, led by Limerick City and County Council’s Placemaking team. The vision for the Market Quarter and Cruises’ Street will reshape the heart of our city. It is another piece in the jigsaw we are continuing to put together in redeveloping the city centre, namely the vision for Arthur’s Quay Park and surrounding areas, along with the recent completion of One Opera Square. Limerick now has momentum and is delivering, turning our plans into action.”

Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Kieran O’Donnell TD said:

“Today’s appointment by Limerick City and County Council of Egis Engineering Ireland Ltd as the Integrated Design Team for Limerick’s Market Quarter and Cruises Street Public Realm Project is a significant milestone in progressing this key infrastructure project for the city centre. My Department is supporting these works through funding from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) as part of the wider ‘Living Limerick City Centre Initiative’, which also includes the development of a new Food Hub at the historic Milk Market. I look forward to seeing the completed design and commencement of works on this high-quality public realm project which will greatly enhance connectivity throughout the city centre here in Limerick.”
