Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, has hosted a Mayoral Reception at Merchants Quay, City Hall, celebrating the career of seasoned journalist, RTE's Mid West Correspondent Cathy Halloran, who has just retired from her position.

Beginning her journalism career in the 1980s with The Farmer Magazine and the Connacht Tribune in Galway, she joined RTÉ in 1987.

Cathy dedicated 38 years of service to Ireland’s national broadcaster and was appointed RTÉ’s Mid West Correspondent in 1993, a role she held until her recent retirement in May 2025.

Her reporting throughout the time touched on many significant issues throughout Limerick and the Mid West region, including many uplifting stories of resilience and community spirit.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, is thrilled to have been able to grant a Mayoral Reception to Ms Halloran:

“As we’ve been thinking about people who’ve made a real and lasting impact on life in Limerick and the wider region, we didn’t have to look any further than Cathy. She has been a calm, trusted and honest voice reporting on Limerick for decades, putting into words our highest of highs, and poignantly describing some of our most difficult moments as a city and county. Cathy didn’t just report the news, she told our stories. Whether it was a tough day or a moment of joy for a local community, or something in between, Cathy was there – not just with a microphone, but with empathy, understanding and fairness. This Mayoral Reception is our way of saying thank you to Cathy for the years of dedication, the early mornings, the rush to meet broadcast deadlines, the tough stories and for always putting people at the heart of her work. I think I speak for all of Limerick when I say we’ll miss seeing her on our screens, but we’re grateful for everything she’s given us and look forward to what comes next after a much deserved break.”

Cathy Halloran spoke of her pride at the recognition, adding:

“I’m genuinely humbled to be receiving a Mayoral Reception. It’s been the privilege of a lifetime to report on the stories of this region for over three decades. The people of Limerick and the Mid West region welcomed me into their homes and into their hearts many years ago. They trusted me and shared their concerns and their joys and I never took that for granted. Being recognised by the city I’ve come to call home is a huge honour. I’ve always believed that journalism is about people, truth and connection. I hope I did justice to that over the years. It is a progressive city and region, with a big story to tell and I am genuinely delighted to have been part of that over three decades. To the Mayor, to the people of Limerick, and to all my many colleagues and friends along the way - thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The reception for Ms Halloran follows two sports-related ceremonies and a similar reception for Michael Benn last month, Grand Marshal of the 2025 New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
