Day 1
Morning
The Three Bridges Walk is an excellent way to get a sense of the city, taking you through the historic Medieval Quarter and along the scenic riverside boardwalks. A visit to the 800-year-old fortress that is King John’s Castle is a must for families. Children will love the ghostly projections and there are plenty of interactive tasks that will stimulate curious minds. A lunch stop in the Castle café, Katie Daly’s Heritage Pub or The Curragower are all nearby options. Burn off some energy at one of the city’s playgrounds. The People’s Park and O’Brien Park have plenty to keep little ones busy, with a range of carefully designed play equipment.
Afternoon
Enjoy some family fun on the water on a kayak tour along the River Shannon or try your hand at indoor rock climbing on the highest wall in Ireland at the University of Limerick. If the weather’s not playing ball, a visit to Jurassic Parr Mini Golf, Jump Lanes or Roller Jam are all super kid friendly options.
Evening
After dinner in one of Limerick’s many family friendly dining spots, kick back and relax at the cinema or try and strike lucky bowling at Arena 5 or Funworld.
Day 2
Morning
Collect a packed picnic from your hotel and set off along the Shannon Estuary Way. Curraghchase Forest Park, a short 20-minute drive from the city is the perfect picnic spot with 300 hectares of rolling parkland, walking trails, woodlands, and playgrounds just waiting to be explored. Next stop is Stonehall Wildlife Park, where llamas, ostriches, meerkats, parrots and more are waiting to greet you. Further along this road is the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum and Abha Bhán Community Park and Playground.
Afternoon
While away an afternoon at Wild Encounters, home to birds, reptiles, bugs and more! Pay a visit to Limerick’s County Town, Newcastle West and take a free guided tour of the imposing and impressive Desmond Castle and Banqueting Hall. Pop into the Castle Demesne Park, just steps from the town’s square, where kids are sure to love the freedom of the safe wooded paths and 100-acre parkland.
Evening
Newcastle West is home to a host of award-winning producers and growers including Cahill’s Farm Cheese and is also where the country’s leading mineral water brand Ballygowan is bottled. Stay for dinner here and sample some of West Limerick’s local produce for yourself!
