Limerick's commitment to sustainable transport is delivering real benefits. In 2025 alone, our Active Travel Team delivered over €25 million in infrastructure projects across Limerick, supported by the NTA.

From major Active Travel schemes like the Mill Road and the R510 Raheen to Quinn’s Cross, to the Safe Routes to School programme in villages like Athea and Murroe we are building a safer and more connected cycling and walking network.

New footpaths and connectivity projects rolled out in the city as well as in towns and villages, such as Kilteely, Loghill, Askeaton and Broadford, created new community links.

These infrastructure projects supported Limerick's successful application to become the first city in Ireland awarded Global Active City status!

Limerick becoming the first Global Active City in Ireland confirms that our Active Travel work is successfully creating a whole-system approach where activity, health and sustainable travel are prioritised for everyone.
