Castletroy Greenway GoGreenRoutes Signage Workshop

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) have been continuously working with and engaging the local Castletroy community to ensure that the greenway considers their needs and what the community would like to see in the area. Recent feedback suggested that locals would like to see the addition of signage along the greenway.

Following this, LCCC added some artwork and signage to the greenway. The art installation was an outcome of previous engagement with the public during workshops held online and in person November 2021 – March 2022.

Unfortunately, some of this has been damaged or removed since installation. As a result, LCCC held a signage workshop online on the 25th April 2023 to find out what the community would like in terms of signage, gain feedback on the greenway and to ensure that future designs are in line with the community’s vision of the space overall.

Details about the online workshop were communicated via:

  • Social media
  • Email - (add examples of organisations contacted)
  • Posters in local buildings
  • Conversations with local schools

8 people signed up for the workshop via a jotform registration link. As part of registration for the workshop participants were asked a few questions;

  1. Would you like to see signs added to the Castletroy Greenway?
  2. What type of signs would you like to see added? Warm & welcoming signs; Preventative signs; A mix of both.
  3. Where do you think the signs should be located?

As there is a Gaelscoil at one end of the greenway one respondent requested that any signage is both in Gaeilge and Béarla, especially with the Gaelscoil at one end.

Unfortunately, only one person made it to the event. Despite the low turnout there were great suggestions made by this member of the public. They include the following:

  • Signs that are phrased in a positive way
  • Pictures have impact
  • Use of more stencils on the footpaths

Signs needed for:

  • Meadow/pollinator areas
  • Sitting spaces
  • Picking up of dog poo
  • Sensory activity
  • Biodiversity
  • Community space

Sign wording suggested:

  • “This is a nice place to sit and listen”
  • “Flowers look good in vases, but it is nicer to leave for the bees”
  • “Your dog may be confident off the lead, but others may not”
  • “This is your area, so take care of it as your own”
  • “Pardon the weeds we are feeding the bees”
