Storm Éowyn UPDATE 3: Continue to Shelter in Place as Red Warning remains in effect until 10am

Storm Éowyn is battering the country causing destruction to property and leaving over half a million homes without power including thousands in Limerick. In Limerick a Status Red warning for wind came into effect at 2am and remains in effect until 10am.

People are advised to shelter in place.

A number of incidents have been reported to Limerick City and County Council on 061 556000 overnight, including:

  • Castleconnell - Report of a tree down blocking road at Coolreiry
  • Cable reported on the road at junction of Henry Street/Mallow Street
  • Templeathea - Electricity cables down on road
  • Glentworth Street, Limerick City - Report of debris from a roof on the road
  • Abbeyfeale - Metal structure reported on road near SuperValu

Limerick City and County Council crews will mobilise after the red weather warning has expired and once conditions are deemed safe.

Limerick Fire and Rescue Service have not had to mobilise to any incidents as of 7am. Crews will only respond to life threatening emergencies during the red wind alert.

Limerick City and County Council’s Crisis Management team will meet later this morning to assess the situation.

Record Breaking

Extreme winds have been reported across Munster.

A mean wind speed of 94km/h and gusts of 137km/h were recorded at Shannon Airport at 5am.

Hurricane force winds were recorded at Mace Head in Galway with a mean speed of 135km/h and gusts of 183, provisionally breaking the previous records set at Foynes, Co. Limerick in 1945 when a mean speed of 131km/h and gusts of 182km/h were recorded.

Power Outages

70,000 homes and businesses are without power across the Mid West.

ESB Networks is warning of the dangers posed by fallen live wires and is advising the public and the emergency services to stay away from these fallen cables and to report such cases to it immediately.

Closures

All Limerick City and County Council offices across Limerick will be closed to the public today, Friday and will reopen on Monday at 9 a.m.
