Southside Boxing Academy has been officially reopened by the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD following an investment of over €430,000 to upgrade the Club’s facilities.

The project, which was funded by the Economic and Social Intervention Fund (ESIF), saw an extensive overhaul of the facility, which is located in Galvone Industrial Estate. Limerick City and County Council’s Regeneration, Sport and Recreation Directorate co-ordinated the works with local firms Carr Architects leading the design team and contractor PBC Ltd. completing the works in 2024.

The removal of a partition on site has opened significant space, allowing the installation of a second boxing ring and accompanying training area. A new heating system, emergency doors and lighting complement the building while upgrades to the dressing room area and toilet blocks provide improved facilities for boxers, trainers and visitors.

Officially re-opening Southside Boxing Academy, Minister O’Donovan, hailed the facility as “one of the finest boxing facilities in the country” and encouraged young club members to follow their dreams of reaching the Olympic games and representing Ireland in the coming years.

Minister O’Donovan commented:

“The transformation of Southside Boxing Academy shows the power of targeted investment in our communities. The €430,000 provided through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund has revitalised this important facility and created a space where young people can thrive. This is exactly the kind of regeneration that delivers real, lasting impact, supporting health, inclusion, and opportunity.”

Councillor Frankie Daly, who has long been involved with boxing clubs across Limerick City, represented the Mayor of Limerick at the official opening. Speaking about Southside Boxing Academy, Cllr Daly remarked:

“This upgraded facility is a tremendous asset for the community. It’s a place where young people are empowered to make positive life choices while cultivating discipline and teamwork. The investment of over €430,000 through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund has transformed the Academy into a modern, inclusive space that will serve generations to come and continue to make a lasting impact on the area.”

Southside Boxing Academy, has operated since 2012 and caters for over 100 members, mainly based on the Southside of Limerick City. Areas including O’Malley Park, Carew Park, Janesboro and Kennedy Park have provided members and coaches with male and female boxers welcomed at the facility.

Welcoming the re-opening, Acting Director of Services for Regeneration, Sport & Recreation at Limerick City and County Council, Declan White said:

“This is a significant investment into a social and sporting amenity in a Regeneration area. This club can now continue to grow, thrive and succeed thanks to this investment through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund. We look forward to watching the progress of the club in the coming years.”
