People need to remain vigilant as Orange weather warning remains in force

The Local Co-ordination Group (LCG) comprising of Limerick City and County Council, the HSE, An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces has convened again this evening (Friday 02 Mar 2018) and has issued an update after reviewing plans to deal with the ongoing severe weather.

Met Eireann has updated the weather alert for Limerick as status ORANGE for snow and ice and that remains in place until 9am tomorrow morning (Saturday 03 March).

Motorists are being advised that national and strategic regional roads in Limerick are clear and passable following a sustained ploughing and gritting programme throughout Friday.

However motorists are still being urged to drive with extreme caution and are reminded that untreated roads can be treacherous due to expected overnight temperatures of below freezing and the possibility of black ice in the morning.

Temperatures are likely to reach +5 degrees tomorrow which will aid the local authority’s efforts.

Snow plough and gritting crews have been working along the strategic route network across the city and county since Storm Emma arrived in Limerick and will continue throughout Saturday and over the weekend.

Gritting crews are due back out on the roads from 10pm tonight (Friday).

Footpaths are being treated in the core city centre area and the main towns throughout the county on Saturday. Further regional roads across Limerick will begin to be treated, particularly at intersections with main roads.

As more and more people begin to leave their homes, pedestrians are reminded to exercise caution when out and about tonight and tomorrow.

Essential services will continue to be provided and the council can be contacted for out of hours emergencies on 061 417833.

For any water issues, e.g. leaks, loss of water, dirty water, sewage issues, the LCG is advising people to contact Irish Water on 1850 278 278 or check their website www.water.ie.

The Limerick Homeless Action Team (LHAT) is continuing to liaise with the emergency housing providers and additional capacity has been made available to anyone who may seek assistance over the period of severe weather.

LHAT can be contacted over the weekend on 1800 606060.
