Limerick City and County Council welcomes the completion of a major €5 million refurbishment of Penneys on O’Connell Street, describing the investment as a significant boost for Limerick City’s economy, retail offering and overall vibrancy.

The newly revamped store, which first opened in 1980, spans 25,000 square feet across two floors and includes an extensive range of customer-focused upgrades. The transformation brings a fresh, modern look to one of Limerick’s most enduring retail landmarks.

Welcoming the investment, Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said:

“This is a hugely positive development for the heart of Limerick. Penneys is an anchor presence on our main street, and this kind of investment speaks volumes about their long-term commitment to our city. We want a city centre full of energy and life, and this is exactly the kind of progress that helps us achieve that.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Catherine Slattery, added:

“Penneys is part of the fabric of Limerick City for so many people, so to see this level of reinvestment is something we can all welcome. This investment shows confidence in Limerick and in the people who live, shop, and work here. It’s an important step in bringing people into the heart of the city and creating a more enjoyable and accessible space for everyone.”

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr Pat Daly, said:

“This €5 million investment by Penneys is a strong endorsement of Limerick’s city centre. As one of our key retail employers, Penneys’ decision to modernise and reinvest here is very welcome. It gives real momentum and a renewed confidence to our efforts to reimagine the city centre.”

Penneys’ refurbishment in Limerick is part of Primark’s wider €250 million investment programme across Ireland, with further developments planned in Dooradoyle next year. Limerick City and County Council looks forward to continuing collaboration with city centre businesses and stakeholders to support a thriving, modern and inclusive retail environment for all.
