Orange weather warning remains in force as thaw sets in post Storm Emma

An ORANGE weather alert for snow and ice in Limerick remains in place until 12 noon tomorrow (Sun 04 Mar) as the thaw sets in post Storm Emma.

The Local Co-ordination Group (LCG) comprising of Limerick City and County Council, the HSE, An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces has convened again this evening (Saturday 03 Mar 2018) and has issued an update after reviewing plans to deal with the ongoing severe weather.

Positive temperatures have aided the local authority’s efforts to clear the roads throughout Saturday and temperatures will be monitored overnight.

All national and regional routes in Limerick are now clear and passable although motorists are still being urged to drive with extreme caution, particularly in West Limerick where crews are encountering additional snow accumulations and slush.

Earlier Limerick City and County Council brought in additional stocks of salt to deal with further accumulations of snow which fell in the county overnight.

A programme of clearing footpaths took place today in the core Limerick city centre area along with Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Rathkeale, Askeaton, Adare, Kilmallock, Kilfinane and Bruff and will continue throughout the weekend.

Essential services will continue to be provided and the council can be contacted for out of hours emergencies on 061 417833.

Civil Defence volunteers are continuing to assist healthcare professionals to get to and from work and have linked with the HSE to provide this service.

The Limerick Homeless Action Team (LHAT) is continuing to liaise with the emergency housing providers and additional capacity has been made available to anyone who may seek assistance over the period of severe weather.

LHAT can be contacted over the weekend on 1800 606060.
