Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Collins has today urged the people of Limerick to ‘support local’ as non-essential retail resumes for many businesses following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions. Mayor Collins is encouraging Limerick people to think Limerick and shop local but also calling on all supporting them to adhere to social distancing guidelines, wear facemasks and be patient.
Limerick City and County Council has worked to support Limerick businesses throughout Covid-19 to ensure they can recover strongly as the economy reopens. The €9.1 million revitalisation of O’Connell Street, combined with the installation of buildouts to increase footpath widths, will help to increase footfall in both Limerick City and towns across the county, which will in turn deliver more business for the retail and hospitality sectors.
The re-opening of Limerick’s non-essential retailers follows the re-opening of Limerick’s hairdressers, museums and galleries and resumption of religious services last week - more milestones in the re-opening of Limerick from Covid-19 restrictions.
Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr Michael Collins said: “Today marks the first time in 2021 that Limerick retailers can open and welcome customers back into stores. This is an important step in Limerick’s recovery from Covid-19 and I hope that everyone across the county will think Limerick and shop local so that we can support the shops and stores that employ many people across the county.”
“Although today is a day to be celebrated, we also need to be aware that Covid-19 hasn’t gone away and everyone in Limerick needs to adhere to social distancing guidelines and continue to wear facemasks while out shopping. Stopping the spread of the virus is the best way to ensure Limerick’s retailers can keep their doors open for customers and avoid any further restrictions, which would further damage businesses and risk Limerick jobs.”
Limerick City and County Council has been supporting businesses throughout the pandemic. The Local Enterprise Office has been offering advice and grants, while Limerick.ie has been operating its Shop Limerick campaign. All the local stores signed up to Shop Limerick can still be accessed through Limerick.ie/Shop.
