Mayor offers his condolences to the family of Professor Michael A Hayes

The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick is offering his condolences to the family of Mary Immaculate President Reverend Professor Michael A Hayes following his death at the age of 59.

Cllr Kieran O’Hanlon said Michael has left a significant and positive mark on Limerick.

“Michael took up the post of President of Mary Immaculate College in October 2011 and since then has worked tirelessly to promote the college and Limerick.  During Michael’s tenure, the Lime Tree Theatre opened, giving Limerick another major outlet to host cultural and artistic events.”

“In its short period of time, it has become one of the best venues in the mid-west for hosting events – large and small.”

“Michael was also instrumental in the development of Mary Immaculate College.  The expansion nearby into the former Sisters of Mercy Mount convent site on O’Connell Avenue, and the innovative joint BA programme with the University of Limerick are just two of the high profile developments of which Michael was at the helm.”

“While just earlier this month, Mary I was granted permission for a new library building.”

“Michael’s has left a truly important legacy for the people of Limerick and for educators across the country.  He will be sorely missed by his family and his wider family of Mary Immaculate College.”
