Limerick projects get top funding from Rural Regeneration and Development Fund

Three major projects across County Limerick are today celebrating a multi-million euro windfall after the announcement that they are to be funded under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Limerick projects accounted for almost 30% of the entire national funding programme under the scheme, with €7.1million in total going to the three projects - €2,724,657 to the Great Southern Greenway, €626,369 to Glenbrohane Local Hub and €3,816,451 to Murroe Community Hub.

Welcoming the announcement Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr James Collins said: “This is a hugely significant day for communities across County Limerick. The fact that we managed to secure almost 30% of the overall national figure for them speaks volumes about their importance.

“The Great Southern Greenway offers huge potential from a tourism and recreational perspective and is an opportunity for us to develop a product of absolute national significance that will give tens of thousands of people every year great enjoyment. Murroe Community Hub is going to be a critical resource to the local area there, an area that has experienced a significant population growth over the last two decades. The Glenbrohane Local Hub, likewise, is a brilliant example of an initiative that will have widespread community benefit. I congratulate all three on this much deserved funding.”

Said Limerick City and County Council Chief Executive, Conn Murray, “Today’s announcement is hugely positive for Limerick, with three of the 18 funded projects coming from the county and two of them the top funded projects. This funding programme aims to breathe new life into Ireland’s smaller towns and villages and this is something that we are very much focused on in the Local Authority. These projects will support local communities, employment and tourism, helping these rural areas to remain vibrant and potentially attract more people to live there.”

Funding for urban projects will be announced on Monday.
