Limerick City and County Council is welcoming today’s announcement by OpenChip, that it is expanding its Irish operations through a new Design Centre at Gardens International in Limerick City, providing capacity for up to 70 highly skilled jobs.

OpenChip are a pioneering company developing high-performance accelerator chips, platforms and software stacks for next-generation AI and supercomputing.

Approximately 40 experienced OpenChip R&D staff are already based in the Limerick facility, with further growth anticipated over the coming year. The investment is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

Gardens International

Gardens International was developed by Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC, the Council-owned company established to deliver transformational commercial and regeneration projects. It is Limerick’s first city-centre LEED Gold–certified office development. The building’s combination of modern, sustainable design and heritage architecture has made it a flagship location for innovative, high-tech companies.

OpenChip’s expansion in Limerick reflects the strength of the region’s talent pipeline, its strong university–industry collaboration ecosystem, and its growing reputation as a strategic hub for advanced semiconductor design and research in Europe.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is welcoming the investment, saying:

“OpenChip’s decision to expand in Limerick is a very significant endorsement of Limerick's ability to support world-leading innovation, research and high-skilled employment. It is yet another vote of confidence in our city centre and the Gardens International building as a location where highly skilled and talented workers want to work and live. Importantly, the creation of up to 70 roles will deliver long-term economic value. I look forward to seeing OpenChip continue to grow and contribute to Europe’s next generation of AI and supercomputing technologies from right here in Limerick.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council, Cllr Catherine Slattery says the prospect of new highly skilled jobs is very welcome:

“This announcement is hugely positive and a real confidence boost for Limerick. OpenChip is working at the forefront of semiconductor and advanced computing innovation, and having that level of ambition and expertise located in our city is something to celebrate. These new roles, from graduates to senior engineering specialists, will further strengthen the skills base of the Midwest and create exciting career opportunities for our young people.”

Dr Pat Daly, Director General, Limerick City and County Council says the announcement is a further endorsement of the Gardens International project:

“Gardens International was conceived and delivered through Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC precisely to attract innovative, future-focused companies like OpenChip, and today’s announcement is further proof that this long-term strategy is bearing fruit.

We set out to create world-class, sustainable commercial spaces that would support high-value employment and position Limerick competitively at a European level. Seeing OpenChip expand its R&D operations in this landmark building is a strong validation of those efforts. I want to congratulate the OpenChip team and wish them every success as they continue to grow their Irish operations from this exceptional Limerick location.”

Limerick City and County Council looks forward to working in partnership with OpenChip, IDA Ireland, Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC and regional stakeholders to support the company’s continued success and to foster further high-value investment into the city.
