Limerick City and County Council named Local Authority of the Year 2023

Limerick City and County Council has been named Local Authority of the Year 2023 at the twentieth annual Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.

The overall award recognised the Council’s extensive work in promoting Limerick as a positive, inclusive and sustainable place to live, work, visit and invest.

The prestigious awards are held in association with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. They recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being carried out by Local Authorities all over Ireland.

Two Limerick City and County Council projects also won awards: Student Planners: Inspiring Future Generations and Limerick on Foot. Eight more projects were shortlisted for awards.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Gerald Mitchell congratulated the Council on their success.

“Being named Local Authority of the Year 2023 is a resounding endorsement of the hard work being done every day by the management and staff at Limerick City and County Council. They are at the forefront of driving Limerick’s economic growth and improving the quality of life for every citizen. This is another example of the different kind of energy that is setting Limerick apart.”

Our award-winning and shortlisted projects span from environmental initiatives to promoting healthy living, fostering economic development, boosting tourism, and enriching the arts. We have a community-centric strategy and a dedication to nurturing entrepreneurial spirit, pursuing vibrant living spaces, and elevating Limerick's national and international profile."

About the Winning Projects:

Student Planners: Inspiring Future Generations won in the Supporting Sustainable Communities category. The project by the Planning, Environment and Place-Making department trialled, and implemented a school consultation program. It actively engaged young people in the preparation of the development plan and local area plan processes.

Limerick on Foot won in the Health & Wellbeing category. The Marketing and Communications department’s social, digital and print campaign encouraged Limerick people and visitors to get outdoors and explore. A Three Bridges Walk map and a digital Walking and Running guide for Limerick were produced. The campaign grew Limerick’s profile as a leisure tourism destination and supported rural regeneration and development.

  • Discover Limerick - Supporting Tourism 
  • Decarbonising Together - Sustaining the Arts
