Take a trip down memory lane to learn more about the history of one of our greenest modes of transport the Bicycle as part of this year’s Bike Week thanks to Limerick Green Leaf City 2020. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of one of our oldest modes of transport and get a glimpse at some of the bicycles of yonder years, like an 1889 Penny Farthing!

The central part of the exhibition focuses on the history of the bicycle itself, from the initial concept sketch produced by a student of Leonardo da Vinci back in the mid 1400’s ,yet the first bicycle would not be made for another 300 years or so.

If you're out and about on your bike during Bike Week 2020, Post a photo on Twitter of you cycling, a selfie with your bike or your bike in a scenic location in Limerick, and use the hashtag #LimerickBikeWeek for your chance to win a €50 voucher to spend at your local bike shop.
Free Minor Bike Fixes and Repairs: 19 and 26 Sept
A Bike Mechanic will be available at the Parkway Shopping Centre, Limerick on Saturday 19 September between 10.30am and 1pm and Mungret Park, Mungret between 2pm and 4.30pm. Cyclists can bring along their bike for a free bike check and minor fixes/ repairs.
A mobile bike repair mechanic service will be at the Murroe Wood Park, Murroe, Co. Limerick, carrying out free bike checks and minor repairs on Saturday 19 September between 11am and 1pm.
A Bike Mechanic will be available at the People’s Park, Pery Square on Saturday 26 September between 10.30am and 1pm and in Castletroy Neighbourhood Park between 2pm and 4.30pm. Again, cyclists can bring along their bike for a free bike check and minor fixes/ repairs.
Cyclocross
Cyclocross Coaching at Limerick Racecourse with Greenmount Cycling Academy on Sunday 27 September from 10am – 5pm. Open to youths and adults. Participants must sign up in advance

Inclusive Cycling
Down Syndrome Limerick is hosting an Inclusive Cycling Event at Limerick Racecourse commencing 23 September. Members only event.
Cycling for All Abilities workshop hosted by St. Gabriel’s Centre, Dooradoyle, Limerick. The event will take place on Friday 25 September and will encourage and enable children with physical and intellectual disabilities to participate in Bike Week. Participation in the event will be restricted to the children with disabilities who attend St. Gabriel’s Centre.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines in operation during the planning phase of Bike Week, no mass participation events have been organised by Limerick City and County Council. However why not get your bike out and cycle around your locality. It might lead to even longer cycles!
