- Update Statement from Limerick City and County Council, the HSE, An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces

Priority is given to the road network which carries almost 85% of Limerick’s traffic.

Met Éireann extended the RED Alert weather warning to the whole country on Wednesday at 11pm with immediate effect.

The RED Alert for Snow and Ice is now in place until 3pm on Friday 02 March 2018.

Met Éireann is forecasting that blizzard conditions will develop from the south Thursday afternoon and evening as heavy snow and strong easterly winds bring snow drifts northwards over the country. Eastern and southern coastal counties will be worst affected.

The Local Co-ordination Group comprising of Limerick City and County Council, the HSE, UL Hospitals and An Garda Síochána along with the Defence Forces is monitoring the situation very closely and will be in regular contact as the events unfold.

The Group is urging people to take care ahead of the extreme weather.

It is again strongly advising people to be at home by 4pm this afternoon (Thursday) as blizzard conditions are likely to lead to accumulations of snow and zero visibility.

Limerick City and County Council Offices, including libraries and galleries will be closed to the public at 1pm. Essential services will continue to be provided and the council can be contacted on 061 556000 or for out of hours emergencies on 061 417833.

HSE Mid West wishes to advise that all routine Community Healthcare services across Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary are deferred today and tomorrow (01 and 02 March). Only the most essential homecare and community nursing services are being prioritised for delivery to older people and people with disabilities.

UL Hospitals have also restricted services to essential and emergency for the period and are making contact with people for whom special arrangements and continuity of service needs to be maintained. Anyone who has an appointment scheduled at a UL Hospital site and is in doubt can contact the relevant hospital.
