The Fine Gael councillor from Clogh, Croagh in County Limerick was elected following the Annual Meeting of Limerick City and County Council in Council Chambers in Dooradoyle today (Monday 26 June 2017).
Mayor Keary was first elected to Limerick County Council in 2009 in the Rathkeale Electoral Area.
In 2014, he was re-elected to the newly amalgamated Limerick City and County Council representing the redrawn and renamed Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District.
Mayor Keary says he will be a mayor for all the people of Limerick and will act as an ambassador for Limerick at home and abroad and encourage continued investment and the creation of opportunities for our young people.
Mayor Keary said: “2017 and 2018 will be hugely important for the future of Ireland as Britain prepares to exit the European Union and I believe, we here in the Mid West region need to speak with one voice.”
“It is my intention to work with my colleagues in Clare and Tipperary to establish a regional forum to work with the state agencies to look at potential opportunities and challenges facing the mid west region.”
Cllr Stephen Keary was proposed by Cllr John Sheahan and seconded by Cllr Adam Teskey. He defeated Cllrs John Costelloe (SF) and Paul Keller (Solidarity) in the election.
Mayor Keary is a qualified civil engineer and also works part-time as a farmer in Croagh. He is married to Bridie and has two daughters Marie and Eileen.
Fine Gael Cllr Marian Hurley was elected Deputy Mayor of the City and County of Limerick defeating Cllrs Elena Secas (Labour) and Paul Keller (Solidarity).
