Cllr Catherine Slattery Elected as Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council

The Annual Meeting of Limerick City and County Council took place today (Mon 30 June) in the Council Chamber in Dooradoyle, attended by Limerick’s 40 elected Councillors, Mayor of Limerick John Moran, and members of the Council Executive.

At the meeting, Cllr Catherine Slattery was elected as Príomh Chomhairleoir  (Chief Councillor) of Limerick City and County Council, becoming only the second person to hold the title since its creation under the 2024 Local Government reforms. The role of Príomh Chomhairleoir, which carries a one-year term, serves as the chairperson of the full Council and is elected by fellow councillors. 

Cllr Slattery received the Chains of Office from outgoing Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney, who was the first to hold the position. 

Cllr Michael Collins was elected as , Leas-Phríomh Chomhairleoir (Deputy Chief Councillor)

In her remarks following the election, Cllr Slattery said: 

It is a proud day for me and my family to be elected as Príomh Chomhairleoir. I am deeply honoured by the trust my colleagues have placed in me. I look forward to working collaboratively with all councillors, the Mayor and the executive to serve the people of Limerick and to ensure that every community across our city and county is represented and supported.” 

Municipal and Metropolitan District Annual Meeting 

In addition to the full Council Annual Meeting, a series of Annual Meetings were held across Limerick’s Metropolitan and Municipal Districts. 

Cathaoirligh and Leas-Chathaoirligh for each of the districts were elected as follows: 

  • Newcastle West Municipal District: 

  •  Cathaoirleach: Cllr Michael Collins 

  • Leas-Chathaoirleach: Cllr Francis Foley 

  • Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District: 

  • Cathaoirleach: Cllr Greg Conway 

  • Leas-Chathaoirleach: Cllr Tommy O’Sullivan 

  • Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District: 

  • Cathaoirleach: Cllr Ger Ward 

  • Leas-Chathaoirleach: Cllr Bridie Collins 

  • Metropolitan District of Limerick: 

  • Cathaoirleach: Cllr Daniel Butler 

  • Leas-Chathaoirleach: Cllr Sarah Kiely 

These appointments mark the beginning of a new term of leadership across Limerick’s local government structures, with a continued focus on community development, service delivery, and civic engagement.
