Counting Begins in Historic Limerick Elections 2024

The opening of ballot boxes from Limerick’s six Electoral Areas began at 9am (Saturday 08 June) and the process of sorting the three sets of ballot papers from the Local Elections, European Elections and the historic Mayor of Limerick Election got underway.

Many of the local and mayoral election candidates are present at the count centre at Limerick Racecourse along with their supporters.

They have been involved in conducting tally counts during the sorting process, which can provide an indication of voting preferences.

The first official counts in Limerick’s Local Elections are taking place this evening.

The European Election ballots for Ireland South are to be transferred to Cork where official counting begins tomorrow morning.

The official counting of ballots in the Mayor of Limerick election will not begin until Monday morning.

The votes from the Limerick electorate will decide the composition of the next Limerick Council which is undergoing the most dramatic change in Local Government in 100 years.

15 contenders were on the ballot paper for the new position of Mayor of Limerick, who will have executive powers and will hold the position for five years.

The successful candidate will represent more than 209,000 people across Limerick City and County.

90 candidates put themselves forward for the local elections where a total of 40 council seats will be filled when the counting is done.

The result of every count will be posted on Limerick.ie/count as soon as they are announced by the Returning Officer.

There will be further information, including video updates from the count centre on the Limerick Count Facebook page or follow Limerick City and County Council’s social media channels, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn
